Our students’ futures are dependent on how well we prepare them to tackle the world of tomorrow and in many respects that will be a world only we can imagine. Our society, and our community rightly/correctly/specifically requires and expects our students to supply the workforce to meet the challenges each generation faces. We cannot wait until tomorrow to begin preparing our students for their futures, this task is incumbent upon our educational systems today. My goal is to foster a level of cooperation and high expectations between our schools and our businesses.
Our energy, resources, and efforts must be centered on assisting the classroom teacher. Good teachers change lives and influence futures. This is not a funding issue, but a support issue. I want to lead a movement of support for the classroom teacher unlike ever before. Throughout my career, I have learned that no matter what happens at the district office, it is the classroom teacher that makes schools successful and that empowerment must begin with the superintendent.
Our taxpayers and our community deserve the best and most efficient use of our tax dollars. Our resources must be concentrated on the classroom and used for assisting student learning. We must regain the trust of our community especially with regards to fiscal accountability. I want to be a leader in the development of a reporting system to enable our community to see for themselves how our budget is spent. We hold our students accountable for their performance on the FCAT, therefore district officials need to be accountable as well.
As principal for twelve years, Bill Husfelt has been responsible for budgets totaling between $10-15 million a year, with as many as 175 employees annually. All budget audits have been positive and compliant.
Bill states, “While almost 85% of our school budgets are salaries and fixed costs, I believe we must use as much of our allocated resources as possible to support the classroom teacher – from aides in the classroom to classroom technology, it is essential that we put whatever funding we can back into the classroom. As the CEO of Mosley High School for the last twelve years, I have learned first hand what it takes to lead a small corporation. Certainly funding is important, but what is more important is what you do with the funding you are given. Being wasteful with tax dollars is irresponsible and counter-productive to an efficient systems approach. I have the experience and know-how to better develop the successful school system we all want and need.”
